First thing you will need is a surfing wetsuit, it's the most important piece of surfing equipment you will need. The average temperature of the ocean is going to be 49 degrees. Without a wetsuit you will become hypothermic very quickly and won't be able to last for those long breaks in between sets. Once you can stay warm in the cold Canadian ocean you will need a surfboard. The first time you head into the ocean I recommend a long board, it floats and you will be able to catch more waves. You won't look cool but you will catch waves. Now your ready to hit the waves. If you surf in the winter I do recommend booties, and gloves.
